Vittorio Fullin (Tenor) (Pola 1895 - ?)




He studied singing under Mandolini and made his debut at Politeama of Livorno as Pollione in ‘’Norma’’. He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in ‘’Aida’’. It has happened in 1925. He sang the role of Radames at the Metropolitan Opera also in 1927. He retired from the stage approximately in 1940.


The new tenor, tall and thickset of build, ample of voice, and routined in action, did not altogether conceal his nervousness, which may have had something to do with traces of tightness and with his changing to a meaningless long "A" vowel, the final word on which occurs the high B Flat of this taxing air. Yet it was smooth and attractive singing and disclosed a voice of good volume and of musical quality. Later, in the Nile Scene, Mr. Fullin sang very attractive phrases and was generally quite successful with his music, despite a little of hoarseness on his top notes. There was every indication that Generalissimo Gatti-Casazza will be able to make good use of him in meeting the manifold requirements of the operatic repertoire.

Eugenia Lopez Nuñes (Mezzo-Soprano) (Livorno 1883 - ?)






She made the debut in 1904 at Politeama Verdi of Carrara as Maddalena in ‘’Rigoletto’’. Since 1905 she appeared in different bigger theaters in the Italian province, thus in 1909 in the Teatro Regio of Parma as an Erda in ‘’Siegfried’’ and in Donizetti’s ‘’Maria de Rohan’’. At the height of her career she went in 1920 to Germany, married there and now appeared under the name Eugenie Heilbrunn. Still in 1932 she made under this name Ultraphon records on which she sings in German. Because she was a Jew, she had to finish her career (and probably also her stay) in Germany after 1933, however, nothing was to be brought about her other destiny up to now in experience.

He studied singing in St. Petersburg under N. Spasski, who trained him as bass. He took vocal lessons also from R. Nuvel-Nordi. From 1912 to 1916 he sang at the St. Petersburg Musical Drama and at the National House (1913—18). Appeared also in Moscow. In 1919 Iwanzoff went to Germany and during the 1920’s made guest appearances in Paris (Grand Opera, 1921), Berlin, Madrid, Barcelona (1921, 1922), on italian cities, Washington, D.C., New York. In 1930’s Iwanzoff lived in USA, where he started to sing with success as tenor in ‘’The Queen of Spades’’ of  P. Tchaikovsky and in other operas.

Domenico Viglione Borghese (Baritone) (Mondovi 1877 – Milan 1957)


 


He studied at the Conservatorio Rossini in Pesaro and under Antonio Cotogni in Rome. He made his debut in 1899 at the Teatro Verdi as the King's Herald in ''Lohengrin''. during of two years he sang in different Italian stages and in 1901 emigrated to North America. Then in San Francisco he lived as a railroad worker and docker, nevertheless, took wide singing lessons. On a recommendation of Enrico Caruso impresario Scognamillo engaged there him in his opera troup, which also belonged Luisa Tetrazzini and with which he travelled in the 1905-06 season Mexico, the Caribbean islands, the Antilles and Venezuela. During this tour he had big success. Then he returned in 1906 to Italy. Here he debuted in 1907 at the the Teatro Regio of Parma as Amonasro in ''Aida'' since then he performed in the big Italian stages with great success. He sang regularly at La Scala and at the Teatro Costanzi of Rome, where he also appeared in 1910 in the premiere of  Leoncavallo's ''Maia''. In 1914 he appeared at the Teatro Carlo Felice of Genoa in the Italian première of E. Wolf  Ferrari's ''I Gioielli della Madonna''. In 1913 he sang at the Teatro Reale of Madrid, in 1914 at the Arena di Verona. Still during the 1930's he appeared in the Italian broadcasting company and guested in the Italian opera houses of Turin and Palermo. His star role was the Jack Rance in Puccini's opera ''La Fanciulla del West''. Puccini called him jokingly 'Il principe degli sceriffi'. In 1919 he guested at the Teatro Colón, Buenos Aires. He also appeared as a guest in Paris and Warsaw. In 1925 he appeared at the Teatro Regio, Turin in the Italian première of Rimsky-Korssakov's 'The golden cock''. Still in 1938 he has appeared as a guest at the Théâtre de la Monnaie, Brussels. His repertoire enclosed more than 70 roles. Only in 1940 he retired from the stage and then lived as a pedagogue in Milan. His repertoire was basically Verdi and verismo. The voice was really good, with an sickly sweet timbre, but also powerful and imperious, as needed. A true dramatic baritone. However, his technique is not really as refined as Battistini's or some other baritones we have already discussed in the thread. More like the verismo school. Instead of singing the aria, sometimes he just battled it to submission.

She studied with the baritone Eugenio Laban and made her debut in 1905 at Bosque of Barcellona in ‘’Aida’’. She spent the period of the Great War in Greece where she perfomed on many Greek stages. After her withdraw, which happened in 1934, she devoted herself to teaching and Victoria De Los Angeles was her pupil. In 1908 the composer Attilio Morandi wanted to devote her the romance "Ave Spes".

Anafesto Rossi (Baritone) (Venice 1883 - Limbiate 1933)

He studied at the Liceo Musicale Benedetto Marcello of Venice, from where he graduated in 1902 as bass. Then additionally he trained at Saffo Bellincioni school under Lelio Casini and Schneider. Rossi made his debut in 1906 at the Sociale Broni in ‘’Traviata’’. He retired from the stage in 1926 and died at mental hospital.

Trained as a church chorister he studied singing privately while employed in a bank. After a debut in operetta, he sang first with the opera company at the Solodovnikov Theatre in 1903 before joining the Bolshoi, where he sang in the seasons 1904-1915. In 1908-9 and 1915-17, he sang with the Zimin company, Moscow, as well as in recitals. In 1907 Gryzunov with great success appeared at La Scala.

Ines-Maria Ferraris (Soprano) (Turin 1882 – Milan 1971)

 



First she studied piano under Antonio Quartero in Turin and appeared already in 1894 publicly as a pianist. Then she also been active as an actress and as a concert singer. her debut as an opera singer occurred in 1908 in Bologna as Philine in ‘’Mignon’’ of A. Thomas. In 1911 she performed at La Scala (beginning role: Carolina in ‘’Il matrinonio segreto’’ of Cimarosa). In 1911 she sang at La Scala in the première  of  ‘’Der Rosenkavalier’’ of  Richard Strauss the role of Sophie. The same part brought her in 1914 to appear at  Rome Opera. At La Scala she appeared  also in 1913 as Colombina in ‘’Le donne curiose’’ of E. Wolf-Ferrari. Arturo Toscanini admired her voice very much. At the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires she sang in the première of E.Wolf-Ferrari’s ‘’Il segreto di Susanna’’, also in Verdi’s ‘’Ballo in Maschera’’ and in ‘’La Wally’’ of Catalani. In 1916 she made guest appearance at the Teatro Massimo, Palermo in ‘’Traviata’’, then in 1920 as Gilda in ‘’Rigoletto’’, in  the 1920-21 season and in 1924 at the Teatro San Carlo, Naples. At La Scala she sang among other things in 1925 in ‘’Hansel and Gretel’’ and in 1927 in ‘’Rosenkavalier’’ of R. Strauss together with Spanish Mezzo-soprano Conchita Supervia with whom she was connected friendly. On 27.3.1917 she perfomed at the opera house of Monte Carlo in the premiere of Puccini’s ‘’La Rondine’’ as Lisetta. In 1924 she sang there in the premiere of Chabrier’s new opera  ‘’Une Éducation of manquée’’. Nevertheless, her career with her appearances reached the climax at La Scala After her retirement from the stage in 1934 she worked at the conservatory of Venice, then at the conservatory of Bologna and at the Accademia Chigiana of Siena; later she was active as a pedagogue in Milan.

Eleonora De Cisneros (Mezzo-Soprano) (New York 1878 – New York 1934)

 



Born in New York City as Eleanora Broadfoot, she received her earliest education at St. Agnes Seminary in Brooklyn. She studied singing under Mme. Murio Celli in New York, and made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera House in 1899. In 1901 she married Count François G. de Cisneros, a Cuban journalist. Between 1900 and 1906 she sang in more than 40 operatic roles in Rome, Milan, Madrid, Lisbon, Vienna, St. Petersburg, London, Rio de Janeiro, Sydney and Melbourne. In 1907 she was Oscar Hammerstein's leading mezzo soprano at the Manhattan Opera House, New York. In 1910 she joined the Chicago Opera Company. During World War I she was a major promoter of liberty bonds.
